Alena Kotzmannova

In her black and white photography, Alena Kotzmannová replaces the old myth of Czech photography with a new one. She treats the medium conceptually, even though, at first sight, her work appears to be traditional. She is inspired by surrealism, poetism, civilism, new objectivism. However, apart from appropriating forms and ideas, she always also includes her own concept. Alongside irony, we find in her photographs elements of nostalgia and romantism. The artist works with closed cycles, each containing a narrative. Their reading is never univocal, an irritating aspect that makes it impossible to perceive her work merely as illustration.
