Beware the Refreeze
When an Arctic blast arrives after a heavy rain or snow event, a secondary threat comes to mind: Black ice. This occurs when any moisture in the roads refreezes, creating a nearly hidden stretch of slick conditions.
Be aware that icy patches are possible throughout North Alabama and South Tennessee as temperatures plummet through sunrise Friday!
Temperatures will drop into the upper 10s to low 20s Friday morning. With so much rainfall and melting snow in the area, it is highly likely that many “roads less traveled” will have issues with black ice and slick spots, especially in shaded areas sheltered from the morning sun.
Travel has already been significantly impacted in Florence where nearly 100 cars have been stranded in the snow.
Huntsville and Decatur may also experience hazardous travel conditions as elevated roads and bridges cool and freeze overnight.
Through sunrise, assume any moisture on the road will refreeze. While ALDOT is busy treating major roadways, county roads and neighborhood roads will remain treacherous through Friday morning.
